Strolling: A Nature-Inspired House that Blends with the Environment

Find In Between: Exploring the Relationship Between Space and Nature

Strolling, a unique house designed by Mingchun Hsu and WenYu Hsieh, seeks to find the perfect balance between space and the environment. With its innovative concept and diverse materials, this project aims to communicate with nature and create a serene and cozy living space.

The main inspiration behind Strolling is nature itself. The designers have carefully crafted three distinct spaces within the house: a garden, a public space on the ground floor, and a private bedroom on the first floor. The design emphasizes the relationship between people and nature, highlighting the differences and roles each space plays. Through the use of scale, shape, material, and shadow, Strolling offers a unique experience where individuals can feel the thickness, lightness, brightness, and depth of nature as they walk or relax in the house.

What sets Strolling apart is its focus on the connection between space and the environment. The designers have aptly named this concept "Find In Between," as the house features a 1/3 courtyard, 1/3 public space, and 1/3 private space. Located in a suburban area with a natural and green courtyard, Strolling aims to establish a dialogue with nature through its intentional design and choice of materials. By incorporating diverse elements, the house becomes a canvas that illustrates the essence of nature.

Technologically, Strolling presents a unique challenge with its staircase. The designers have used two different materials to represent the distinction between the public and private areas. The lower half of the stairs is made of marble, symbolizing rocks and wilderness, while the upper part showcases lightness and transparency. The suspension system used for the stairs replaces traditional load-bearing or cantilever systems, adding another layer of complexity to the design.

Strolling boasts specifications that include a ground floor area of 115 square meters, a first floor area of 115 square meters, and a garden spanning 115 square meters. These dimensions provide ample space for individuals to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the surroundings.

The project, which began in March 2018 and was completed in October 2018 in Taipei, required extensive research and experimentation. The staircase, in particular, posed a significant challenge in terms of structural design. The U-shaped steel plates used in the upper part of the stairs are 9 millimeters thick, with the longest suspension element measuring 5.3 meters. The handrail underwent rigorous testing to ensure stability and safety.

Strolling has been recognized for its exceptional design and creativity, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that showcase ingenuity and resourcefulness, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. Strolling exemplifies strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.

Strolling is a testament to the harmonious relationship between architecture and nature. Its thoughtful design and meticulous attention to detail create a space where individuals can truly connect with their surroundings. By seamlessly blending with the environment, Strolling offers a unique and immersive experience that celebrates the beauty of nature.
